Appointment System

Consultations are by appointment only and can be made in person or by telephone to the surgery.  You can consult any of the doctors.  Let the receptionist know which GP you wish to attend and the receptionist will advise you of the first available appointment with this GP.  .

If you are taken suddenly unwell and your illness cannot wait until the next available appointment, your details will be passed to one of the GPs who will call you back to assess your needs.  You will not be able to choose a preferred GP in this situation nor the time of your appointment. 

When you telephone to make an appointment, you will speak to one of our reception team.  The receptionist will ask for your name and date of birth or that of the person you are representing.  This ensures that the correct patient details are recorded.  The receptioist will ask the reason for your appointment and we appreciate that you share this information so you can be directed to the approprate healthcare professional.  The GP is not always the appropriate person and you may be advsied to contact your local pharmacy, optician, nurse, phlebotamy service, treatment room, minor injuries clinic, physiotherapry.  See signposting link below.

Appointments are scheduled for ten minutes with the GP.  If you feel that you require a longer appointment, please let the receptionist know at the time of booking. 

Appointments are for consultations only.  The GP will not complete forms or issue repeat prescriptions during an appointment.

GP Extended Hours

As part of the Government’s plans to improve healthcare we are now open some evenings from 5.30pm until 6.30pm, mainly to see patients who are unable to attend during the day for their appointment. Please note, reception staff are not always on duty at these times, and you will, therefore, not be able to contact the Practice by phone. If you are late for an evening appointment you will not be seen. If you need to cancel you appointment within 24 hours please either phone or use text messaging service. When you arrive for your appointment please wait in the waiting room and one of the doctor’s will call you.

This service will be for routine medical conditions and is not an emergency service. The service is limited where doctors will be restricted in their physical examination of patients, and scope to arrange investigation.

Patients will therefore not be able to have blood tests, smear tests or an intimate examination requiring assistance from a chaperone, any chronic disease management review, but will have to return for a day-time appointment if these services are required. Young children and the elderly who require to be brought to the surgery by working family members will also be welcome to these appointments.

Signposting

There are many health problems which do not require a GP.  Using the appropriate service will mean that patients with serious and chronic health problems do not have to wait for a GP appointment.

If you feel that you need advice from one of the GPs or the Practice Nurses and this does not merit an appointment, let the receptionist know.  The receptionist will require your name and date of birth, a return telephone number and the details of your enquiry. 

The GP or nurse will return your call as soon as they can.

Nurses & Healthcare Assistants

Our Practice Nurse consults by appointment only.  Appointments range from 10 minutes to 30 minutes depending upon what the patient is attending for. Reception staff will advise you when you are making your appointment.

  • Arran - Monday from 08:30 until 18:00, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 08:30 until 14:30 and Wednesday from 08:30 until 16:30
  • Pollok - Monday & Tuesday from 08.00 until 17:30, Wednesday from 08:00 until 16:30, Thursday from 08:00 until 17:00 and Friday from 08:30 until 14:30.

The Nurse see patients who are Diabetic, Asthmatic, Hypertensive, have Coronary Heart Disease, have had a Stroke, Heart Failure or suffer from Emphysema. They, also, take blood, offer cervical screening, give family planning advice, and advise on minor illnesses eg coughs, sore ears etc.  Information on these services is available from reception.

Our Health Care Support Worker is trained to take blood, blood pressure, height and weight measurements and lifestyle information including smoking, alcohol, exercise and diet. They are not trained nurses so cannot answer queries on medical or nursing matters.

  • Arran -  Tuesday between 0900 and 1530
  • Pollok - Wednesday between 0900 and 1530

If you would like to speak with any of the Practice Nurse team, please telephone reception.  The receptionist will take a message and the nurse will return your call.

Whilst we encourage our patients to come to the surgery, where we have the proper equipment and facilities available, we do appreciate this is not always possible. In this respect, if you do need a home visit, you can help us by calling reception before 10:00.

You may only request a home visit if you are housebound or are too ill to visit the Practice. Your GP will only visit you at home if they think that your medical condition requires it and will also decide how urgently a visit is needed. Please bear this in mind and be prepared to provide suitable details to enable the doctor to schedule house calls.

Urgent requests for a house visit can be made at any time. When the surgery is closed, please telephone one of the above numbers and the message on the answering machine will provide details of whom to call for a home visit.

You can also be visited at home by a community nurse if you are referred by your GP. You should also be visited at home by a health visitor if you have recently had a baby or if you are newly registered with a GP and have a child under five years.

Intimate Examinations

We understand that these can be stressful and embarrassing.  The GPs will always obtain your permission before carrying out such an examination and offer you a chaperone.  This can be a nurse or a relative or friend.

Interpreting Services

If you do not speak English and have no access to someone who can interpret for you, please speak with one of the receptionists.  The receptionist will ask for details of your nationality, spoken language etc. and organise an interpreter for you via the Glasgow Interpreting Service.

Ambulance Booking

As of 25 September 2012, the responsibility for arranging transport to outpatient appointments now lies with the patient.

Cancelling or changing an appointment

You can also complete our appointment cancellation notification request form. This can only be used if your appointment has been arranged for more than 24 hours in advance (excluding weekends and public holidays). You can also text to cancel your appointment.

Text Reminder Service

We have a texting service which allows you to receive confirmation and reminders about your appointments.

To have this service you will need to register by completing a consent form.

Travel vaccinations

If you're planning to travel outside the UK you may need to be vaccinated against some of the serious diseases found in other parts of the world.  Travel vaccination is no longer undertaken in the Practice but by City Doc.  The service provides travel health advice, risk assessment and vaccination.

Trainees and Students

We are a training Practice, with most of the Partners being directly involved in the postgraduate training of doctors who are pursuing a career in General Practice.

Each year, the Practice has General Practitioners in training who have completed a series of hospital posts.  We hope that you will accept their service as an extension of our own. 

As part of their training, some consultations are recorded and reviewed by the trainee and a Partner. You may be asked for your permission for your consultation to be recorded for these training purposes, and if you have any concerns, of course you have the right to refuse.

We, also, have undergraduate medical students and nursing students who, with your permission, will sometimes be present during consultations and house calls.  The undergraduate students are from the University of Glasgow and are from years 3 and 5.

 The recorded consultations are:

  • used for analysis and assessment alongside their Trainer
  • in order to improve and develop GP consulting skills
  • only done so with the express permission of the patient, and can be declined by the patient
  • reviewed in confidence between the Trainee and Trainer for the purposes of training
  • stored safely or encrypted when awaiting review
  • erased once viewed
